An old photo of a radio star as the Lone Ranger reminds us that some adventures play better in our minds and hearts than on the big screen.

Once, on the roof of the Museum of Modern Art, a group of us was discussing good-looking movie stars, particularly Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando. A girl nearby added “And Jimmy Dean.” Jim was there, of course, and he stood up, twisted his head to give us his profile against the sky, turned back to us and took his teeth out and crossed his eyes. We all laughed, except the girl. Her face turned red with embarrassment as she stared at him. He put his teeth back in and threw her a kiss, which seemed to calm her down enough for her to be able to smile. - Roy Schatt
